Stephen Maguire is convinced Belgian prodigy Luca Brecel is a world champion in the making.

Glaswegian Maguire secured his World Championship last-16 place yesterday with a battling 10-5 victory over teenage sensation Brecel.

But the Scot, gunning to win his first Crucible crown in Sheffield, insists the 17-year-old youngster is capable of winning the game’s grandest event in the future.

Maguire said: “Luca’s a potting machine. He’s one of the fastest players I’ve seen – and he’s fearless.

“Right now he has the potential to win the World Championship one day. There won’t be a 17-year-old in the world right now who can play like him.

“He’s the youngest ever to play at The Crucible and he’s a nice kid, he’s got everything going for him.

“Good luck to him, I just hope I don’t draw him in the World Championship next year.”

Maguire led 6-3 overnight and was always favourite to progress but the former Crucible semi-finalist knew he still had to finish the job with his opponent snapping at his coat-tails.

And although Brecel reduced his arrears to 6-4 with a brilliant break of 86 in the first frame of the concluding session, it was Maguire who made his experience count to progress.

Breaks of 101 and 94 took the former UK champion within one frame of victory and, after Brecel got another frame on the board, the world No.7 made sure of his place in the next round.

Upbeat after a promising Crucible debut, Luca Brecel said: “I didn’t play my best but I can’t wait until next year.”
